Feature film by Mehdi Barsaoui
What if you could suddenly start a whole new life? Aya, in her late twenties, still lives with her parents in southern Tunisia and feels trapped in a life without prospects. Every day she commutes between her town and the hotel where she works. When the minibus crashes one day, she, the only survivor of the accident, realizes that this could be her chance to start a new life. Aya flees to Tunis under a new identity and is determined to maintain her new reality for as long as possible, even if it requires a great deal of repression and some lies. But soon the past catches up with her when she becomes the main witness to a police error.
Aicha is Mehdi Barsaoui’s second feature film after the internationally successful A Son (AFF 2019). His new film brilliantly combines character drama and thriller, thanks in part to the acting performance of lead actress Fatma Sfar. Aicha won an award in Venice in 2024 (Best Mediterranean Film) and was screened in Durban, Rio de Janeiro, London, Seville, Goa, and Mar del Plata (Best International Film), as well as at the Red Sea Film Festival.
