Documentary film by Simone Bitton
Edmond Amran Elmaleh, former communist leader and activist for Moroccan independence, was born in 1917 into a wealthy Jewish merchant family from Essaouira. He left behind an extensive literary oeuvre that masterfully expresses personal and collective memories. Using excerpts from his writings, personal testimonies, and archival footage, director Simone Bitton paints a cinematic portrait of this fascinating and educated man. The film reflects on Elmaleh’s profound memories and explores the intertwined experiences of Jewish emigration from Morocco and the expulsion of the Palestinians.
Simone Bitton’s films have won numerous awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the César Award for her film Mur about the Israeli wall in the West Bank. With her film Ziyara, the director was a guest at the Arab Film Festival in 2021.
