Documentary film by Nada Riyadh and Ayman El Amir

“Are you happily married?” – “Did you get married too young?” – “Are girls not allowed to love?”

In southern Egypt, hardly anyone dares to ask such questions – except in the remote village of Barsha. A group of young girls there rebelled and founded a street theater group consisting exclusively of women. Majda, Haidi and Monika have high hopes for the future. They dream of becoming actresses, dancers and singers. But their families have other plans and so the young people challenge their relatives and the villagers with their unexpected performances. Shot over four years, the film follows these courageous girls from childhood to adulthood and shows how they face up to the most important decisions of their lives.

The Brink of Dreams, a gripping, sobering and deeply human story, screened at the 2024 Semaine de la Critique in Cannes and won the Œil d’Or award for best documentary.
