Documentary film by Brahim B. Ali, Alex Veitch, Mohamedsalem Uered and Anna Klara Åhrén
The voice of one of North Africa’s greatest singers still echoes across the Sahara. Mariem Hassan’s life and music are deeply marked by the tragedy that befell the Sahrawi people during the colonial era and continues to this day. Her songs offer comfort and hope and were used as a weapon in the struggle for Western Sahara’s independence. The film interweaves Mariem Hassan’s music with historical events dating back to the Spanish colonization of the region and the subsequent occupation by Morocco. Archival footage and interviews with family members, artists, friends, and revolutionaries show Hassan’s commitment, while her moving music and poetry reflect not only her spirit, but also that of Sahrawi women and a people who continue their struggle for self-determination, their land, and their resources.
