Game(s)Changer – Sugar plantations in the Caribbean

Saturday, 12 December, 2 pm until 8 pm

Drop-in workshop for anyone who enjoys playing (aged 16 and over)

An afternoon workshop featuring games, talks on sugar, its production on plantations – particularly in the Caribbean – and how to play games based on this topic. For anyone who enjoys playing games (aged 16 and over).

2 pm

The game “Puerto Rico” (Andreas Seyfarth) will be played; players will cultivate plantations for tobacco, cotton and sugar, which they will then sell to Europe. Various versions of the game will be presented, explained and played.

Games editor André Maack will talk about how he oversaw the game’s revision and why it needed to evolve from a colonial to a decolonial game.

4 pm

Yann-Oliver Kersaint will give a short talk (live via video) on work on sugar plantations in the Caribbean. He is a geographer and artist whose regional focus is on the Caribbean islands. His academic work explores the co-production of space and risk.

4.30 pm

Collaboratively ‘reinventing’ “Puerto Rico” and similar games about sugar and plantations. Experimenting with game ideas.

You can attend any part of the day individually or as a whole. The event is in German and, if required, in English.
