The splendor of flowers, birds and fruit in East Asian painting

The cabinet exhibition in the East Asia department presents works by the artist Monika Hoffer together with works of flower and bird painting by well-known Chinese and Japanese artists from the 16th to 20th centuries from our collection. This genre, highly valued by traditional scholars of East Asia, aims to unite the objective and subjective worlds, the fusion of one’s own feelings and the contemplation of nature. The paintings thus reflect the artists’ personalities, which were shaped and refined precisely through the precise observation of the motifs.
