Prinz der Weisheit – The Many Stories of a Bodhisattva in Stuttgart – One-object exhibition in the South Asia Gallery
In the 11th century, unknown artists in western Tibet made a magnificent brass sculpture in the “Kashmir style” depicting the bodhisattva or future Buddha Manjushri.
Manjushri (literally: gentle or sweet glory), also known as Manjughosa (sweet voice), is the embodiment of wisdom and is usually depicted as a young prince.
A religious image, the sculpture stood for many centuries on an altar in a Buddhist monastery in western Tibet. Since the 1990s, it lives in exile in Stuttgart as a museum object.
What stories can the Bodhisattva tell us, about Tibet and its people, about Buddhism, about cultural exchange in the Western Himalayas and about the histories of collecting?
Discover this and more in this one-object exhibition.
