Feature film by Meryam Joobeur

Aïcha lives with her husband Brahim and their three sons on a farm in northern Tunisia and has a gift for prophetic dreams. Aïcha and Brahim’s world is turned upside down when Mehdi and Amine, the eldest sons, go off to war. Months later, Mehdi returns home with a pregnant wife named Reem. Aïcha welcomes Mehdi and Reem into her home and vows to protect them at all costs. Brahim, on the other hand, is deeply disturbed that Reem wears a nikab and is always silent. Mehdi’s return triggers strange events in the village. But Aïcha is so focused on her son that she barely notices the growing fear in her surroundings at first. Now she has to go to the limits of her motherly love in order to counter the growing darkness.

Director Joobeur emphasized in an interview that Tunisia is one of IS’s biggest recruiting hotspots. In her stirring feature film debut Mé El Aïn, which celebrated its world premiere in the 2024 Berlinale competition, she goes in search of “what drives people to commit extreme acts of violence”.
