Feature film by Mahdi Fleifel

Chatila and Reda, two Palestinian cousins, have a dream: they want to open a café in Germany. They have already made it as far as Greece, but they are living there illegally, without papers, without prospects and without money. But giving up is not an option. Undeterred, they stick to their goal, even when increasingly questionable decisions have to be made.

Mahdi Fleifel wanted to pay tribute to his favorite cinema, the early films of Martin Scorsese and Brian De Palma from 1970s New York, and created a thriller set in Greece in which the main characters are not necessarily the good guys. To a Land Unknown is both an empathetic film narrative and a captivating, uncompromising and nuanced look at the living conditions of migrants.

The film premiered at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes in Cannes in 2024. It has screened at numerous festivals worldwide, including Toronto IFF, San Sebastián, New Zealand IFF, Shanghai and Sarajevo IFF.
