A musical journey through Japan with Sylvia Shoin Bittmann

The shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute, is famous for its diverse sound variations. It offers a unique opportunity to interpret nature in a special way. Let the gentle sounds of the shakuhachi guide you through the incomparable nature of Japan, past majestic mountains, tranquil valleys, endless rice fields and venerable temples. Every note tells a story, every song brings you closer to a piece of Japan.

Accompanied by the beauty and depth of shakuhachi playing, this journey takes you through the rich musical tradition of Japan. Originally brought to Japan from China in the 8th century, the shakuhachi was played by Zen Buddhist wandering monks (komuso) in the 17th century in order to attain enlightenment through its playing. Today, the shakuhachi has also found its way into modern and western music, enriching jazz, blues and even rock music with its unique sounds.

Immerse yourself in a world full of harmony and closeness to nature and let yourself be enchanted by the melodic sounds of the shakuhachi. Experience how this music reflects nature and takes you on an inner journey.

Sylvia Shoin Bittmann, who studied shakuhachi at the Tozan School in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, from 1992 to 2010, is a founding member of the Japanese yosakoi dance group Todoroki Yosakoi in Stuttgart. She has been performing nationwide since 2013 and inspires audiences with her playing of the shakuhachi and yokobue.

The matinée concert will take place in the newly designed East Asia exhibition.
