Documentary film by Michael T. Workman and Kei Pritsker

On a cold morning in April 2024, a group of students set up camp on the lawn of Columbia University in New York. They founded the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” to protest against the war in Gaza and their own university’s investments in the US and Israeli arms industries. The action causes a stir both nationally and internationally. It quickly spreads to hundreds of campuses, becoming the largest protest movement since the Vietnam War.

The Encampments captures the deeper connections of a historic moment that continues to resonate around the world, featuring activist Mahmoud Khalil, professors, whistleblowers, and organizers: a film about power and resistance in the 21st century, where both have taken on new forms. At the same time, the role of universities as bastions of democracy, critical thinking, and freedom of expression is under pressure. The Encampments is a report from the fluid front line of an ideological conflict over right and wrong. The film had its world premiere at CPH:DOX 2025 in Copenhagen (Special Mention Human Rights Award).
